Floor Patterns
Each 400x400cm
The brief for this project asked that the interior of the building reflect the culture of Malaysia and that the traveller be aware of a distinctive traditional identity in the context of a contemporary building. Fire rating, durability, and maintenance were important factors and design solutions used building materials already allowed for at the planning stage.
After travel and research in Malaysia, separate floor pattern motifs were designed for each of the four arms of the building. Each motif grows in complexity toward the centre as a reference to departure/arrival and the designs reflect the cultural diversity of the country. The meeting of the motifs at the central hub references the geographic location of Malaysia at the crossroads of South-East Asia.
